I had postpartum psychosis. AMA.

Hi, sorry for the delayed reply. The little guy woke up sooner than I expected.

From the day he was born I did not sleep longer than two hours at a time, and no more than four hours in a day. I was increasingly becoming irritable and I had a ton of energy. I was up in the middle of the night rearranging furniture and bleaching sinks and stuff. My mother in law was here to help and I started believing that she was plotting against me. I kept getting angry and telling my husband this until finally he read on an info sheet they gave us when I was discharged about postpartum psychosis and I checked off all the boxes - so he took me to the emergency room.

They admitted me immediately and I was inpatient for sixteen days.

In the hospital I got worse before I got better. I was catatonic for nine day and I believed that alien beings were replacing the people around me with fake, animated versions of them made up of rotting pieces of bodies. So for example my nurse would come in to check on me a few times a day and sometimes she would look like an animated, rotting meat puppet version of herself. My husband would bring the baby in and the baby looked like he had been replaced by a "meat puppet" baby as well. He looked like someone took rotting baby body parts, sewed them together and animated them and tried to convince me it was my baby. I thought the aliens were sending these things to try to collect information about me.

As time went on I started to believe the staff were plotting against me and sending me messaging in my head telling me to leave. At one point in the middle of the night I walked out of my room and started yelling at them to give my baby back because I thought they stole him.

Up until then I was refusing to take the medication they wanted to give me, but eventually I agreed to take it and it snapped me out of it rather quickly.

I can't speak for other women with PPP but I think mine would have progressed to the point where I did something really awful if I had not taken the medication.
