Is hearing a gunshot once enough to cause permanent damage?

Agreed, I really hate people who cry about "toxic masculinity" but when it does exist and leads to a person feeling like he has to be timid asking about something as important as his hearing, there's a problem. Not harping on you OP, more on the people who perpetuate elements of our culture that emphasize "toughness" over "not being fucking stupid".

As for your question OP, I shot a Mosin in my early adulthood without hearing probably for 10 rounds and had ringing for a day. I did this because I was stupid. I got a hearing test a week later and everything was fine. When people here say you have permanent hearing damage, they're right, but in the same way going to a loud concert also gives you permanent hearing damage. It is likely a tiny amount that by itself isn't much but it all accumulates over our lives.
