It's a keloid. Which is basically just a build up of scar tissue. You definitely should NOT take the peircing out to clean it. That will just cause even more trauma to the area, and most likely make the keloid worse. I've never gotten one on any of my piercings, but my little sister gets them on almost every single peircing she gets. Keloids don't go away on their own, it needs to be treated - or removed. My little sister has gotten all of hers to go away by doing saline soaks, and by doing a spot treatment with tea tree oil. I've heard that making a aspirin paste and doing a spot treatment works as well.
