How to answer "what would your previous employer say negatively about you?"

Look, here's what you're essentially saying: "If I told you about my problems you wouldn't hire me, so I'd prefer to just accept looking unstable and suspicious by keeping my mouth shut rather than embarrass myself completely by answering the question."

You don't have Miranda rights in an interview, nobody is going to give you a free pass to shut up and call a lawyer. They'll take you at your word when you say your issues could prevent you from being seen as a desirable candidate.

Nobody is saying you need to plagiarize a response you found on a guide somewhere; you're just supposed to think of a personal response that shows how you can acknowledge and manage shortcomings with maturity, humility, and professionalism. Instead of doing that, you're shutting down and getting awkward over one of the easiest questions you could get.

What's going to happen when a client asks you about a problem? "If I told you it would hurt our chances of keeping you as a customer, and I'm not willing to risk that." What's going to happen when management asks you about progress on an assignment? "If I told you it would hurt my chances of getting a raise that I really want, sorry."

Lastly, the fact that none of this occurred to you after careful thought and consideration would be just as problematic.
