How to Build your world - Part One

I'm only just now getting into DnD and I really like the idea of being a DM. I've always liked the idea of coming up with a world and letting it build itself. What I mean by that is instead of building a single adventure plan for the players, I love the idea of dropping the players into the world I've built for them, and let them shape it the way they naturally would. This way it's much more organic and you can avoid the improvising for the most part.

As an example, just last night I was playing a pseudo, not very detailed mock game with a friend while his gf sat off to the side doing something on her phone. She seemed slightly interested and we were able to convince her to join. Even though we has already started, the way I structured the world allowed for a new player to jump in. She then started to play against us, trying to make it difficult for us to actually play. Again, the way I structured the world allowed things to work out. The idea was that they would form a party and go off on their adventure together, but what ended up happening is they landed in the city dungeons. None of that was planned. It wasn't much of a struggle to work them into the cells either because I let their characters run through my world in an organic way, even if we were getting trolled. While she was in the cell she decided she didn't want to play anymore, but I used her character history to remove her from the game in an organic way. Letting the characters being living people in a living world is the mindset I have when I structure these games. I'm glad to know I had the right idea, as I'm still not really sure what it is I'm doing.
