How to cure/deal with excessive retching/gagging?

About a year ago I started noticing that the most random of activities would make me repeatedly retch/gag (e.g. brushing my teeth, putting a cigarette between my lips, smelling certain scents (even pleasant ones))

Fast forward a year and its come so far that I can hardly keep any food or liquids down without gagging or throwing up. I have to avoid anything that has a 'strong' scent in fear of triggering half an hour of random, painful retching. Even the thought of certain things that make me retch will set me off into another gagging fit.

Slowly but surely I've had to change my lifestyle completely as to avoid the gagging fits as much as I can; I hardly eat or feel hungry anymore, I avoid going outside as much as possible as to not have to smell any strong scents, and avoid most social interactions out of fear of causing a scene.

I recently made an appointment with my doctor, who turned out to be incredibly unhelpful and gave me no insight whatsoever as to what I was experiencing.

I suffer from depression and anxiety and am left to believe that this retching situation must have something to do with that, since I haven't managed to find any other reasonable explanation for it.

If anyone has any advice or helpful information to share, I would LOVE to hear it!
