How do you differentiate between lifestyle creep and improving your quality of life?

One example... First car is used bare minimum. It breaks horribly... I need car for job... So I need a car again and have a stable job.

I decide to get a new car but no frills. I but small reliable Japanese car for inexpensive price. Three improvements to my quality of life: new car is huge deal both physically and emotionally, spend less on car per month (no more hundreds of mechanic bills... Surprise from unreliable car), lastly in the price range I get something a little exciting.

Third car I get is again small reliable car... But this time with some cool luxury features: leather, 201hp, string sound system. None of those are necessary... But not frivolous... So IMO quality of life. Car makes my physical and emotional self very happy for three years... Quality of life. New car sounds fancy but it's only $20k out of the door. Great 33mpg for commuting.
