How does one go about valuing a human being, and what is that value?

His dismissal sorta hinges on the premise that you can only, as an observing subject, dole out valuations to things external to yourself, and that you also can only evaluate the worth of things that are... not the same category of thing you are?? Even putting aside the MASSIVE simplification of "billions of actors engage in their own lexicographic and marginal valuations" to "capital-H Humanity acts in tandem to establish the definition of value", why can't the evaluating entity determine its own value, anyways? Is it a metaphysical egoism thing where the act of valuation is assumed to be in service to yourself, always? But then why have people commited suicide sacrificing their life for others', e.g., soldiers in war?
