How probable is it to be an immigrant and achieve the American dream? What is your experience with the American socio-economic ladder?

My father immigrated here from Nicaragua during the civil war there. I've been to visit the town he grew up in, and about 15 years ago it was kinda big news that they got a paved road. He of course was a smart guy and started working some good jobs in Nicaragua before marrying my mother who is an American citizen, which let him come here. He's worked his ass off the entire time, and spent most of my childhood working on college degrees and licensing.

I'm not going to pretend that he's rich or anything, my father is terrible with money because he spends everything he earns on new cars and traveling. But damn man, he came from a tiny village in Central America where cock fighting was the main entertainment, came to the US, had two really successful children, and now his main worry is about managing money because he buys too many cars?

Yeah, the American dream is achievable for sure. Sorry if that's a bit rambling, I've drank a bit of beer tonight and sometimes I think my brother and I give my father too much shit, but he really has worked his ass off to make something of his life and I really respect that.
