How windows 10 spies on you [X-POST /r/linuxmasterrace]

I am not biased against Linux in any way - I use it all the time. However, I think that there is a large and vocal segment of the Linux community that view it as some sort of moral/religious 'right' and feel the need to indoctrinate people into using it or 'win the war' against proprietary software and so forth, which tends to get me riled up and snarky, as it did today. I was honestly just being a shit, I don't care all that strongly about the issue. I will give you that I am being a bit of a 'jackass'.

I have not had just one or a few bad experiences with it, however. I have tried to use it as my primary OS for years, but each time I try to get 100% into it it just doesn't work well enough (I sometimes want to get '100% into it' because of simplicity - usually I am running at least OS X and Windows and sometimes Linux as well, and having everything on the same OS would be a bit cleaner). I still use headless Linux servers regularly, but the desktop Linux experience is just inferior IMO to what other OSes provide. I DO love toying around with computers - Linux makes that HARDER for me to do in most cases. I want to drop into a game, play for a bit, jump out and code, watch a movie, swap some hardware around, etc., and generally speaking any one of those things involves more setup and troubleshooting on Linux than it would have if I just did it on OS X or Windows (except for the hardware thing with OS X, obviously, since they are restrictive as fuck with drivers).

I am quite interested in and somewhat familiar with computer security and privacy, and it irritates me to NO end that people seem to think that open source software is inherently immune to problems in these areas, and then try to 'sell' people on Linux as an alternative. At best, that is just helping move people from one system to another and hoping that security through obscurity is going to keep them safe. This thread is about Windows 'spying' on you (read: at worst, it sends some data to a server where no human ever sees your specific data), and is written by someone whose flair tells us we can 'ascend higher' with Linux. This isn't a thread about keeping people safe, it's a thread about converting people to Linux (or the OP actually does believe Windows is a bigger privacy and security risk inherently). It's dumb, misleading, and annoying.

So anyway, I was snarkily mimicking the sort of evangelical nonsense that I sometimes see, and perhaps did tread a bit on the 'jackass' side of sarcastic. But it's not because I am crusading against Linux, just fanboyism. I really don't care what you run on your machine, it's all good.
