If you have a parent on your back because they are saying you are not doing this or that for their student, you are probably a much better teacher than they are a parent.

I made the mistake of going out of my way to communicate home before Thanksgiving break, giving my students and parents a heads up that there was incomplete work. I was told by a parent in receipt of my email (that was sent as a total favor) that the district I work for needed to fire and replace me with someone else because their child’s failure in an upper level elective class of mine was my fault—apparently my pedagogical approach was wrong. Parent physically went to building principal (despite the school being shut down due to COVID) and called the superintendent’s office. After spending 2.5 hours compiling data from our LMS and gradebook, I simply presented the facts, objective data, and an explanation as to why I deliver content in manner I do (equitability). Even wished them a Happy Thanksgiving. I never did hear back from that parent, so I think I’ll chalk it up to a “miscommunication between the student and parent that I was honored to be a part of clarifying”. I am happy to report though, that my administrators (who were BCC’d on the email) had my back after presenting the data.
