I'm raising my son on Netflix, and so far he has not been exposed to one iota of advertising, and has no idea what the 'cool' toys are.

Ofcourse stabbing could be a service, that could be my job, you don't know!

And no, ads CAN cause physical harm, they alter your thought patterns deliberately and cause you to do things you wouldnt usually. What if I was a total moron, and instead of buying my children food, I got skuppered by an ad for a timeshare. Spent every penny I had, and the little fuckers aren't going to eat again till I get a job. Would that constitute harm? It's hyperbolic but nothings stopping it from happening.

He might be a proactive user, but the service isn't ads - that's not what we sign up for when we open a browser.

The service attacks you in your own home with advertisements, you and your kids, how's that safe?

I was ofcourse being facetious when I wrote my previous comment, however I stand by the sentiment. Ads are not safe, and the option to turn them off should rest with the user... It would be unethical to force me to consume something I don't want to consume.

Ad companies work in secret, tell lies and litterally only exist to prey on the weak minded, building brand allegience and selling people useless shit they don't want or need. And they have successfully managed to pay the way for 3 of the biggest companies in the world to exist. How much money are they making from the sales of other people's products/work? I struggle to comprehend the power of advertisement, but their lobbyests must be talking a good fucking talk to convince business that they do something helpful/productive/ethical.

I think fighting unethical practices with unethical practices cancels out the unethicalness of the whole mess. I never asked YouTube to show me ads, I asked to see a specific piece of content and they give me something completely different. What gives them the right to hoodwinkle me?

Besides YouTube only actually delivers markup - it's entirely up to my browser how that markup is interpreted, it's also perfectly reasonable for me to control and shape my own traffic, if I don't want to visit a site that peddles advertisements, that is totally upto me. Nothing about choosing how YOUR computer interacts with the internet is unethical, it's fucking savvy, and I'd say your the moron for thinking you owe anything to the websites you visit. It's not on you to make their shit valuable, that's their problem. Were already paying some cunt for access to the network - why doesn't that pay for content, when it's the content that gives the network value? What do the ISP fees pay for? Why are we constantly being asked to pay the next guy, it's barmy that we live with this shit and think it's normal. It's not. It's very organised theft.
