Indian Relatives and Prejudice

I feel this hard these days. My dad's mad sick and he's really doubled down on his islamophobia, racism, etc. Makes it hard to talk to him.

My parents have actually lived in the US longer than they lived in India. Like, easily twice as much. Excepting my dad's recent behavior they even typically skew liberal (socially, at least). Even then they had a lot of really oldfashioned stories. I think part of it is that their generation doesn't think of lots of things as being "offensive" or "oppressive" like we do. My dad was telling me the other day that he used to be "too scared" to walk into American bars and has never been to one in his life. Asked him why, he said "oh, I just feel like...I wouldn't be welcome there." But at the same time he insists that racism has played no part in his life. So simultaneously he'll believe some racist antiblack nonsense like "Africa has never had a written language" (!?!?!) but also treat his Black colleagues with as much respect as a non-black liberal can pull off.
