America is more standardized, but with such a big country, there’s plenty of regions with distinct accents. Here’s a few examples.

I’d also note that of course they sound similar to an outsider. Familiarity with something lets you make distinctions. That’s also why Americans screw up placing what region you’re from. Meanwhile, people from New York can tell what borough they’re from, while to the rest of us it all sounds like New York.
