This interview rules. 2005, Snoop Dogg walks into the British radio show Tim Westood with a blunt lit, starts randomly freestyling over the studio backing track without being asked, passes the blunt to the DJ

I do think you're on to something there. I think freestyling is very similar to guitar soloing or musical improvisation in general.

This is like a seasoned vet of freestyling. It's like watching a guitar solo from Slash vs. a guitar solo by the guitarist from Fall Out Boy. The kid in F.O.B. might be pretty talented and doing some dif things, but he doesn't have the experience that Slash has. Slash hears a minor chord and he can remember 6 different sick riffs to play over that minor chord, fit them into the key he's playing in, and rip. The new guitarist might be really good but he's still just building that type of knowledge.

Snoop is like Slash, but the rhymes are the guitar solo riffs. A lot of his lines and rhythms are things that he's probably done before, but it's like you freestyle for so long you just remember every single word that rhymes with hook.

Let's say a brand new rapper, someone like Danny Brown is freestyling, and he says "Book". Raw talent says that Danny Brown will come up with some sort of sick bar after that line, but there is also a chance he might just stumble out a weak one and the freestyle ends up seeming a little unstable or rocky.

Now let's say Snoop Dogg is rhyming and says "Book". Snoop already has like 8 different words that can rhyme with Book, and he also remembers the exact setups he used last time to get to the word. He's already rhymed book with these various words for like 20 years so there will be no uncertainty that the next line will come out in perfect time, and the whole freestyle ends up just seeming super smooth and well controlled in the end. Snoop is the combination of raw talent with years of experience.

I think Snoop has almost become a gimmick to some people, his persona is so outlandish, he's like a real life cartoon character. But this interview and probably some other stuff are a good reminder that behind the big personality and cliché cloud of weed smoke around him, he has always had and still has that real, genuine, no-gimmicks, no studio magic bullshit, real rapping talent.

He also has a certain flow and a certain way of sort of "sing-songing" some of his words that I've never heard anyone replicate and I highly doubt anyone will ever be able to do it without everyone thinking they're doing a Snoop impression. Whether you think he's technically great or not, no one can ever say a damn thing about Snoop Dogg's uniqueness as a rapper. People have gotten away with stealing Tupac's flow, Eminem, Jay-Z, but you can't rob Snoop, it's just way too one-of-a-kind.
