Jack Black Breaks Down Meeting Homeless Ugandan Boy Who Just Wants An Education

The thing is, most of the poor black people in the US don't want help. They want free things, and to do very little to get those free things. They've been conditioned that they're owed something and that this is the land of opportunity - if you don't make it, it's someone else's fault.

I live in a great neighborhood, but we have a couple blocks of Section 8 housing in there too. I've tried to help those families and the kids that live around me. I've offered them money to rake leaves, mow the grass and do things I don't mind doing myself. Of course, I could just give them money - but what good is that? So, I try to teach them skills, how to be responsible and that nothing is for free...

And that shit doesn't work at all. Half the kids never show up when they say they will - the other half want to be payed as soon as they show up. Give them $1 and they disappear. Those same kids - they've stolen my bicycles, broken into my cars.. They laugh and make jokes about me (for what, I don't know) - but I hear them laugh and snicker as I walk my dog by them. I've treated every single kid in that neighborhood with respect. I grew up dirt poor and raised myself - I put myself through college and made what I have on my own. I want better for those kids, and I've tried.

One of the little delinquents that stole my bike (twice) off my porch - I confronted him about it and he told me to go fuck myself. I called the cops on him. I could have had him arrested, but didn't - I just had him put on trespass notice, since I knew adding to an already lengthy record at his age would do him no good. Guess what - now I'm the racist in the neighborhood among those kids, since I called the cops on their little thief friend. Forget all the money I've given them, the candy and drinks I've bought for them - the school fundraisers I've supported. Now I'm racist because I wouldn't allow some little 15 year old to take advantage of me.

Sorry to rant, and I'll get off my soapbox now. But this is why pouring money into helping the poor black people won't work. They're already given tons of incentives and advantages to see they succeed - but most of them don't want them - they just want things for free.

And this is why I want to help this kid. This kid only wants to succeed. If he was granted access to 1/4 of what the poor American kids had, he'd guaranteed make it. He already speaks English, which is huge step. This kid just wants a chance. And I'd love to give him that chance. The kids here - they've all got chances. And they don't give a shit. All they see is Lil Wayne - dancing on the wing of some 50 million dollar jet. They want that, but without the work.
