Get a job, don’t rely on ex-husband: Indian Court to woman seeking alimony

In this case, the judge's decision is correct. This particular lady though just sounds lazy. But to clarify alimony:

There's more to it than being just an allowance. In countries like India, women aren't expected (sometimes not even allowed) to work while married or even get an education (unless you're part of the elite class). For the vast majority, all they have to look forward to is a life of motherhood and home making. Few even lack the skills to function independently because that's just how they've been conditioned all of their lives. They don't even gain independence as wives and homemakers in their own household because most are actually dependent on the whims of the mother-in-law. You can't just change over night to have all the characteristics of a model employee.

Sadly, home making doesn't count for any relevant work experience. Not many people are gonna want to give you a job because you have no history of ever working. That's why alimony exists (in the Western world too) - it's compensation for not having a career or retirement plan of your own because your spouse provided it in exchange for your duties at home. In many fields, if you're out of work for more than 6 months to a year, good luck finding someone to hire and train you in your late adulthood/middle age.

If men don't want to be caught in a situation like this, then marry a woman who out earns you. You rarely hear about women paying men alimony but it's happening as more women move into higher income fields and stay-at-home dads become more common. I know a few female surgeons who pay alimony and child support to their ex's, and this is in the conservative state of Missouri. I'm expecting this social phenomena to show to become more common the news in the next 15-20 years. Women only started going into these fields in a significant way in the last 20 years ago, so just give it time.

Furthermore, India is an extremely class divided society. It's not like here in America where anyone can find work as a cleaner or grocery bagger if they wanted. Each caste in India has its designated job fields that are considered appropriate for that level, and there's no way to move up or down the social ladder. If you're social class tells you that the only job you can do is become a clerk of some sort, you're not going to find work as a laborer, cleaner, nanny, etc (unless you want completely shame your family name as be cut off).

India also has some deeply misguided female labor laws, basically forcing employers to make exceptions for the women who DO work. It's sexist and actually discourages employers from hiring women, so there's a lot of discrimination there too. Those laws stem from the mentality that women are weak and can't do the same work as men, and also their glorified role as wives and mothers because they should leave early to go home and take care of their families...even though out in rural areas they bust their jump just as hard under atrociously inhumane conditions.
