Karen Straughan, TRP heroine: "And yet women--yes, women--have allowed a narrative to become entrenched in all our systems and institutions that males favor other males at the expense of females."

All her examples of "men not hating women" stem from eras & places where women were/are valued primarily as commodities.

"Men have bled for their women, fought to protect their women, died for their women" (notice her repeated use of the word "their")

Yes men have done these things for their women... but also for their cattle. When raiding villages I'm certain Boko Haram didn't kill the cattle either. They did what countless men before them did: "The women and cattle and goods he saved and divided among his men." -- The Adventure of Odysseus, Homer

I suppose she's right that "men don't hate women" in her examples: hatred can't be expressed until both parties are on equal footing.

Notice how hate groups often seem to form on both sides when one group of formerly oppressed people becomes emancipated. On one side you find a group of people unwilling to adapt to the loss of some of their former privilege. On the other side, a group of people with resentment for past wrongs.

A hate group like the KKK could only come into existence once slavery was abolished. White people probably didn't "hate" black people as much back when they could view them as inferior creatures without agency. Inversely, black people didn't hate white people as much when they viewed themselves that way.

The war between Hutus & Tutsis was also born in a similar scenario: The emancipation of the Hutus, formerly treated as inferiors, led to them violently expressing their resentment against the Tutsis.

That seems to be where we're at now with men and women in western society - thankfully with less violence. The majority of men & women are striving to balance things out & not subscribing to such simplistic narratives as "all men hate women" or "all women hate men" or "men have never hated women".
