Railroad kinks are the result of thermal expansion. The rail is free to expand out as much as it wants, but lengthwise each section is blocked by the next section. Each section expands against the next until that force exceeds the rigid strength of the rail and it buckles. You can easily illustrate this by applying pressure to the ends of a length of wire. You cannot compress the wire lengthwise, but if you push hard enough the wire will buckle to the side.

Hopefully you understand sun kinks now, and you can see why they have fuck all to do with rebar corrosion inside concrete, or this apparent belief that rebar expands when exposed to water. Which it doesn't.
