Little help with trade in value and why it's so hard to get fair book value?

My Explorer sells in this area for anywhere from 38.5-41k with comparable options and miles. As I said it’s been taken care of and all documented, only recon it honestly needs is an oil change then nothing till it’s 60k service. I don’t think any dealer would lose their ass on that deal, if anything they’d move a car off their lot and divert profits until the sale of my Explorer, which again seems 100% reasonable to me.

Tax credit is the only reason I don’t sell outright as of now, which is why I believe dealers are offering that number is because they know if I sell outright I’ll lose 4k in tax, even though that doesn’t come out of their bottom in any way.
