Lost my job. How can I make money in the meantime?

For one reason or another I’ve been in this situation more than I care. Desperately searching for a job is horrific and it’s a lot different than searching for a better job. Here is what I’ve learned.

  1. Your new 8-10-12-14 hr job is finding a new job. It doesn’t matter what it is so long as it pays the bills.

  2. Desperation is depressing and stressful. Anytime you feel that, focus on the work you’ve done. Use it to fuel your drive instead of draining you of strength.

  3. Diversify your searching. Don’t just use job websites. Call temp agencies, staffing agencies, large businesses. For job websites update your resume daily so the last edited time stamp is always current. This lets hiring agents find the most relevant candidates.

  4. If your skills are more specialized, call small business directly and ask to speak with department managers. Have work related conversations. You never know when an ungrateful employee is about to do something stupid.

  5. Timing is everything. Sometimes you do your best and things don’t roll your way. The trick is to maximize the number of times something CAN go your way. Eventually even the worst luck gets dealt a good hand. Keep trying!
