Loyal cleaning woman who hit hard times during the Pandemic was given an apartment thanks to all the people who lived where she worked. She's given a 2 year lease.

If you got your current rent paid by someone else, you need to report it on your taxes. At worst, you'll pay 30% of your rent. 70% discount is pretty nice, no?

Let's now assume you are a lower-waged housekeeper who. Are you likely to have high or low rent? Low, right? But even that was too much, and she needed to move home.

Now you have given her a giant penthouse, and she will pay 30% of the rent as taxes. I strongly suspect this 30% is going to be a huge number, and likely greater than what she paid before. If this is truly an luxury NYC penthouse, costing at least $10k/month, she now has to pay $36k in taxes. I guarantee she wasn't paying that much in rent before. She would rather have the cash and not the apartment.

Why take a discount on a Ferrari when you just need a Honda Civic? Even if someone gives you the Ferrari, you should only sell it. The insurance and taxes are going to cost you more than the Civic, probably by a lot.
