Because if anything goes wrong like an earthquake in Japan then the fallout creates the worst disaster zone imaginable. There's got to be a safer solution. Also, nuclear waste, do you bury it? Send it into space? How much would that cost? If you bury it, what happens if it comes in contact with our ground water? We already have the city of Cape Town set to become the first major city in history to completely run out of water. The process of procuring nuclear power plants is also fraught with corruption. Here in South Africa, we have a broke government busy pushing for a nuclear deal with Russia and the United States, the costs are over a Trillion South African rand (÷13 for dollar amount) and Putin has basically told our president to reshuffle his parliament so that individuals (who are paid off) will sign off on the deal. It will send our weak economy into it's final death spiral. I'm not saying the rest of the world can't afford nuclear, but there has got to be a better solution, for clean and affordable energy. No one can tell me that nuclear is completely 100% safe. You cannot foresee an earthquake, or a tornado happening. If we could cancel out corruption, and use even a 10th of that money to invest in different clean energy solutions, it would make alot more sense to me.
