I made this knife and sheath for my Father's birthday

Very nice. Good photos too.

I must ask, why Bocote? This sheath matched with a Cocobolo handle would have been epic. Perhaps I just don't like Bocote.

Some woods that would look really pretty:

  • Cocobolo
  • Bloodwood
  • Bubinga
  • Kingwood (Very hard stuff. Be prepared)
  • Purple Heart (Starts out very purple when fresh cut but will mellow to a beautiful brown over the years)
  • Red Heart
  • Ebony (It's just black but GD if it ain't beautiful.)

Woods to be wary of:

  • Paduk (Large pores and will take extra time to fill during finishing. And if your goal is red, why not just use Red Heart?)
  • Any type of Palm (HUGE pores. It's a nightmare to finish)
  • Snakewood (Very expensive and brittle. I always stayed away from it for this reason.)
  • Burls (Ohh so beautiful but it is basically a diseased part of the wood. It can be brittle and hard to work with. It's worth the effort though)

And that is the end of my unsolicited wood advice. Keep up the good work. This knife and sheath really do look nice even if I am a wood snob. :)
