Do men really feel safe walking alone at night?

While you are making a generally correct statement about who a criminal targets, I wanna point out that to me your comment read as someone who is indeed afraid but puts up the unafraid face as a deterrent rather than just having that face cause you’re indeed not afraid. Not knowing anything else at all about you to provide more context I immediately assumed at first that your lack of fear that you say you project outwardly doesn’t come from a genuine lack of fear, but actually from the fear itself. Also assumed that youre a dude, who are generally larger than women and obviously size in and of itself is a deterrent. These are only my assumptions, though and very well may be untrue about you! You made a good point but the way it read to me, it didn’t go any deeper than “just pretend youre not scared works every time!”

My point is not the assumptions I made lol…just that people who are out trying to target people can be pretty good at reading people. A serial mugger/abuser will probably see through a brave face that isn’t genuine. Immediately and intuitively. Pretending not to be scared isn’t enough to protect you from the real scary people. At all. It helps weed out the petty criminals, but not to the ones capable of the worst. The ones who are gonna take your wallet and leave you with a few bruises and scratches, sure. The people capable of actually causing severe damage will not be deterred by someone who is pretending, no matter how convincing.

It’s also not true of every criminal that they target this way. Some get off on choosing people who look unafraid, because of the challenge.

Sorry for my long comment and again, not saying anything about you personally. My only intent in responding is trying to give more perspectives to add to the answering of OP’s question and I felt yours left this out, just as I’m sure mine is leaving out others!
