[MN] Got a second DWI, what can I expect?

Invest in a real lawyer, public defenders are usually garbage. Your lawyer will help to try to negotiate the charges down. Whatever happens though, understand that not investing in a decent attorney is going to cause you much grief for a very long time. Your insurance company will likely drop you from their coverage if they're informed, or you're rates will skyrocket. Consider the former option a blessing. Criminal background checks make getting jobs significantly more difficult as many companies have a zero tolerance on candidates with multiple DWI. Any career transitions you want to do, I would suggest doing them now before your court date. You will also be required to attend a years worth of classes, which in itself will run you $25-$75 per session, once or several times a week.

Expect the charges to exceed over 10K pretty easily, which doesn't include the loss of time you're going to spend in court and these rehabilitation type sessions. A worst case scenario would be a breathalyzer being installed in your vehicle and you having to blow into it in order to start your car, which adds more time you're going to have to take into consideration. You pay to use this service too, which is another burden people don't consider.

Your mug shot will also be found publically which in turn people will use to extort you for more money as they'll post these photos all over the internet. Since you had one DWI you're probably familiar with this, if not then you'll be seeing this.

Like I said, if you want to switch careers or jobs, now is the time. If you enjoy what you do now, do everything in your power to not piss them off. Your life just got a hell of a lot more complicated.
