Moss trade looked good, at first.

This is getting revisited because of the Peterson situation, and ironically it being the 10 year anniversary. There's some significant differences in looking at the situations though. Moss had just turned 28 when he was traded, and as far as I know, receivers for the most part are still able to be productive well into their early 30's. Running backs not so much.

The NFL has 86 instances of a back going over 1500 yards in it's history. Only 5 of those instances have been by players over the age of 30, and only 3 players have manged that. For context that is half the number of players that have gone over 2000 yards in a season.

By comparison there have been 80 receivers to go over 1400 yards in a season (Moss has done it 4 times). So its roughly an equivalent milestone. 14 players have gone over 1400 yards (Joe Horn gets honorable mention getting 1399, as does Henry Ellard at 1397... since we gave Barry a nod at 1490 in the other thread).

In hindsight, we still got good value for Moss. Even if we took a crappy player with that pick. We got a top 10 pick and a player who up to that point had been a decent starter for Oakland. If we got the same offer for Peterson, we'd be stupid not to take it. Statistically speaking its absurd to think that Peterson is going to get back to 1500 yards, let alone the 2000 some people are speculating. Realistically he's looking at closer to 1200 if he gets over 300 touches this season, and frankly, I don't think he will that many given the emergence of McKinnon last year, and our ever growing ability to throw the football.
