My son is allergic to almost everything

I hate these people making jokes! This is actually very serious stuff. My brother has had severe food allergies since birth. He has to carry a epi-pen everywhere he goes in case a waiter forgets us telling him 25 times that he cant have any dairy, nuts, soy or fish be in any direct contact with anything he orders. We have to check labels on everything. If we are lucky enough to find something he can eat; the fine print will say "made in a factory which uses nuts" People think allergic reactions are when someone sneezes or coughs or gets hives. They believe a simple benadryl will cure it and often times that is the case for which I would say it is no big deal. My brothers and so many other peoples are life threatening. Imagine having a young child and not having him be able to go to a pizza party or a birthday party because he is not old enough to comprehend that if someone gives you something to eat- you cant because you can die? A story was on the news awhile back about a teenage girl who was allergic to peanuts who kissed a boy who had eaten a peanut butter and jelly sandwich earlier in the day. The girl died. Allergies are no laughing matter. They are in fact very serious and deadly. Anaphylactic reactions require immediate medical treatment as your blood pressure will change and you can die. He is limited from so many things; we can not go out to eat as a family often, he can not travel out of the country for fear that labels will be hard to read, and even well known products bought in stores have made mistakes with labeling. So, yes these prick tests done by allergists do look funny but I have a great deal of sympathy for his mother. My only advice would be to be very forceful and direct (by also being nice of course) when trusting people preparing your foods. Some waiters are really busy and over worked and don't understand the seriousness of this.
