I need help

I'm 17 and coming up to 3 years diagnosed so we're pretty similar there. So far I have managed it quite well (a1c of 6.5) so I'll try to give you some help.

My diet is similar to yours, I skip meals all the time but when I do eat I eat loads but it hasn't been to much of a problem. I think one thing that makes it easier is having a group of 5-10 foods that you eat consistently and knowing the carb counts well.(for me this is stuff like bagels, pizzas, certain amounts of cereals...) Having the high carb counts has never mattered for me as long as you know them accurately. The consistency will make carb counting less annoying as you will already have it remembered and it could make it easier to find out what your ratios are again.

For blood tests, there are some useful tips like putting alarms on your phone to remind you but overall I think just general discipline is the best helper here. You are not going to overcome your current habits without it being uncomfortable but with perseverance new habits will form. It's important to remember that blood testing isn't that difficult - not overly painful or time consuming, it's just the thought of doing it thousands of times that is daunting so take it one test at a time.

In terms of a 'verbal kick up the ass' i'll say this: diabetes is going to negatively affect your life. that much is decided already, but luckily you have the power to decide how it does so. Either it's through consistently small but annoying increment (meaning blood tests, injections, carb counts etc.) or it will be in a much more serious and permanent way later down the line. This thought motivates me to do the tests and injections now as it is relatively easy compared to what could be.

That's about all I've got - I hope this is useful in some way to you if not, sorry and feel free to ask me anything else. Good luck :)
