Nepalese army removes two tons of waste from everest.

My girlfriend spend several month in Nepal and Tibet working in a Tibetan refugee camp as an English teacher (she went as far as Rongbuk Monastery on the Tibetan side of Everest, apparently the altitude sickness was wild).

Everest/Sagamartha/Chomolunga is incredibly sacred to Sherpa people and Tibetan Buddhists and that to Sherpa people climbers are basically uninvited guests. They also believe something like idk super karma is in effect on Everest so all of the effects of your actions are magnified. I think in Bhutan they don’t actually let anyone climb their mountains because of how sacred they consider them.

It’s a shame people toss their rubbish everywhere not only because it’s a sacred site but also because it makes it hard to sleep on the mountain without coming across turds and other rubbish (although it’s a little more unavoidable when it comes to poop because ... you have to go). It sort of reminds me of Lascaux where they had to close it to visitors because they were inadvertently destroying it.
