Hi

I recently purchased a house. The house had been vacate for 9 years, it had no electricity or water, no gas either. I had a house for less than a week and then I hired a painter to paint the house so I can rent it. It was a snowy cold day. A girl comes and knocks at the door, she know the painter. They are Facebook friends. The painter tells her, she can not come in the house. She said she is cold and she need a phone to call someone. The painter feels sorry for her and instructs the woman to go to the car and get warmed up and he give her his cell phone. In the car she sees a key, the key belonging to the house that the painter had left in the cup holder of his car. She stoles the key to the house that was left in the car and some money. Then she leaves. At the end of work day the painter realizes that the key is missing when he wants to lock the door, so he locks the door from inside and then he leaves. The next day another contractor comes into the house see the person (the woman) on the floor; dead and calls the cops. The cops come and take the body. Autopsy is performed. the results of autopsy is drugs plus carbon monoxide. The stolen key is found near her. I am not sure why she has carbon monoxide. The only thing I can think of if she had to turn on the generator that was inside the house. The generator was there because the contractor needed it because as mentioned there was no electricity in the house and he need the generator for power tool.

The reason for no electricity not being turned on was that the city would not turned it on unless and license electrician would certify the house as electrically safe. So, I hired an electrician and he changed the panel, the next day he contacted the town and electricity was turned on.

Cops spoke to the painter, and me. No charges has been filed. They told us we are not in any legal issues.

She stole the keys to the house, she was told not to come to the house by painter. The house was locked. She trespassed into my property. She used drugs in the house. She messed the the entire floor with paint and in her stupid way she might have possibly turned on the generator I don't know and she died there.

My questions is this, am I in any shape of for responsible for her death? I live in NY.
