[Oculus Fluff] Finally Cancelled my Rift Preorder

I can definitely echo your sentiment. I was a Kickstarter backer for the original Rift, so they sent one to me for free. I had been using the DK1 and DK2 so I was in the Oculus camp so to speak. However, since I didn't have to shell out $600 for the Rift, I put that money toward a Vive instead.

The Rift arrived and then the Vive a few days after. I'll admit that I was not as enthusiastic about the Rift as I was the Vive because of the motion controllers, so I set up the Vive first. I configured a nice big room-scale area with the base-stations at the maximum 16 feet diagonal (about 9x12 feet) and it's simply amazing. The motion controllers with room-scale make a really compelling experience. It's just fantastic.

Then I set up the Rift and immediately the lack of motion controllers and room-scale felt very confining. First, aiming at the menu options with your view (as opposed to the motion controller) is just pathetic. Second, the lack of absolute tracking is a major flaw in the Rift. With the Vive, it knows exactly where the floor is and exactly where the base stations are, so it knows exactly where you are in the room. The tracking is relative to the physical room. But with the Rift, the tracking is all relative to where you start and it's just not compelling. Third, the Rift has a weird aberration that distorts the image. I will admit that the Rift produces a slightly better image quality than the Vive, but if you don't have the headset on perfectly, it looks distorted on the edges, as if you're looking through a fish-eye lens. And this problem isn't simply a matter of adjusting the straps on the headset because the margin for error is extremely small. This was something I did not experience at all with the Vive. Fourth, The in-VR implementation of Steam is way better than Oculus Home. There's no question about that.

So basically, I put the Rift back in the box and I don't plan on using it again. If they send me the motion controllers for free (as they did the Rift) then of course I'll try them. But I probably won't buy them. I don't see how it could beat the Vive at this point.
