Official Discussion - Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens [SPOILERS]

I liked this film, a lot more than I thought I would because I wasn't as fucking retarded as most people expecting it to be better than IV/V/VI, I praised it on its on strengths.

I feel most people bashing it are doing so on the basis that it isn't as good as the originals, it never was going to be, the originals were a phenomenon and became more than just a trilogy but this time of criticism was inevitable. A movie filmed nearly 39 years ago, by a different director, different main characters, different filming techniques, different movie right owners will be different, you fucking idiots. How did people even expect it to be as good as or better?

Things I enjoyed....

  • I enjoyed seeing the old cast again, it felt slightly forced but not overly as they would still all be relevant in the galaxy at that time.

  • The jokes were more clever than the majority of Avenger style one liners.

  • The Storm Troopers had a genuine air of malice to them.

  • The set pieces and scenery was breathtaking, pretty much all the scenes were beautifully shot. Especially that part where the light casts down on Han.

  • Big alien gollum projection was cool, I didn't think that was the worst CGI in the movie at all, so I don't get the huge criticism.

  • Chewbacca and Han back on the Millenium Falcon.

Things I didn't like...

  • Yes Rey, we understand you are a strong, independent lady. Showing it through actions would have been better than "Don't hold my hand."

  • Character development was poor, so poor. The only characters that shone were because they were in the previous films, the acting also felt weak from everyone except a couple of exceptions. Finn and Rey felt like filler until the last 20 minutes. And fuck General Hux, I know Gleeson can act better than that, it was so overly camp, if you are going to evolve the movies don't stick with the same villains from 40 years ago.

  • The plot holes, but I expect there will be reasons that we don't know yet so I'm not dwelling over them.

  • The fact Finn wasn't immediately dead when fighting Kylo, I don't even care about superhero Rey when Finn can defend himself from a sith.

Things I FUCKING hated.....

  • Kylo Ren after the unmasking, Adam Driver was the most uncharismatic weird looking choice for such an important character and now that women are flocking to their computers saying he's the next Handsome Brando is ridiculous. He looks like a melted Mr Potato Head but can't act as well.

  • That awkward, horrible, lightsaber thing at the end with Rey and Luke. It was so horrible I had to move around nervously in my seat to cope with it.

In conclusion...

  • Better than I thought, but had faults like I knew it would. A fun, "accessible" Star Wars to new fans but also appeals to older ones who KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT.

7 Kylo Ren Potato heads out of 10.
