Oklahoma families may get a $5K tax credit for private schools. How much would it help?

There are all sorts of ways roads are funded. ODOT receives about 600 million or so from income taxes, and the rest of their budget is made up from federal money, and local tax revenue. Schools also have a plethora funding mechanisms, which include income taxes.

If I had a helicopter, I would drive a lot less. I could tell you that. I would basically be like Kobe, flying around everywhere. So should the state government subsidize my choice to have a helipad?

As for food stamps, the last time I checked, there isn't a public alternative to private grocers. The only mechanism in place to keep people from starving is to give them money to go to a private grocer. However, there are 509 public school districts in Oklahoma. If there were 509 public grocers funded by taxpayer dollars and the state constitution said "The legislature shall establish and maintain a public grocer system" would I be ok with the legislature handing out money so the richest among us could get a break from trader joes? Probably not.

What you are suggesting runs counter to the spirit of the state constitution, which does not give the legislature the authority to establish a private school system or to maintain a private school system.
