Oklahoma Republican Party compares food stamp recipients to animals

There seem to be a lot of people in this thread agreeing with the sentiment, and I would just like to offer my own anecdotal experience. I've never been on EBT ("food stamps"), but I have taken advantage of social programs and I in no way feel ashamed about it.

When I had my first child, I was working as a clerk in a market. With the new child, my family was eligible for WIC and Medicaid and we took advantage of both of these programs. Without this assistance, my wife and I would likely both have had to have been working full time to support the family we now had. but with this help, my wife was able to stay home and care for the kid, while I continued to work full time while and I started to go back to school at a community college, which was free for me due to my income status (Using Pell Grants and the California BOG waiver). I eventually got my foot in the door to a new, higher paying career through communit college (while I finished my bachelor degree though online courses paid for with federal student loans), and I now have a job that pays 70k a year, my family no longer receives any assistance (we have a second child now too). I certainly pay more back in taxes at this point then I ever took from these social programs (probably every year even). Without this temporary assistance, I don't know if financial constraints ever would have allowed me to change my situation.

While my experience is only represents myself, I just wanted to add it so people understand that there are real people who are affected by these things, it is not just a line on a budget or the butt of a joke in a tweet. Some people may game the system, but these people are probably going to be a drain on society one way or another anyway, so I support my tax money going to this kind of thing even though I no longer personally benefit from it.
