People who work in hospital - What is the worst thing you have seen a patient go through?

I worked as an EMT in NYC during college pulling some weekly shifts. Though not in a hospital, I think this qualifies. This happened during my second official day working.

We were attending a call for an 18 year old male who suddenly lost consciousness. When we get to the house, the guy turned out to be alright, but pulled off some breathing tubes that were helping him get enough oxygen because he was in a bad car accident a few months ago, and he recently learned that he'll be paralyzed from the legs down. Instead of being in college that time, he was at home bedridden, understanding he won't be able to walk again (really hoping for a major medical breakthrough with nerve regeneration). He tried pulling off his breathing tube so he can pass away. Being the same age as him, it really hurt to see someone have to endure such agony at this age when we are finally exploring the world without our parents constantly there for us in college. He was screaming, begging for us to let him go, and this call occurs on a weekly basis, according to my partner on shift.

I think the hardest part was watching his parents while we were there. Their eyes showed pure defeat, heartbreak, and pain to see their son go through this. From all the cardiac arrest, broken bones, and drunk mishaps this call has resonated with me the most. This call was the one that completely desensitized me from people dealing with unfortunate events.
