A lot of this stuff makes me glad to live in Australia where the insanity isn't so bad. There's no need to worry about your date bringing a gun along, for example. And in major cities at least public transport means that they're probably not bringing a car either.

The point above about evictions is also very local to the USA. Australian law for obtaining tenancy requires a written lease or documented evidence of payment and residence. Without that you're at the whims of whoever is on the lease/owns the property and the cops tend to be pretty blunt. NSW also has DV protections but I've never needed to go the formal route. I've once had a tenant threaten me but the cops were round pretty quickly and helped him move out immediately.
