Phil Jackson twitter post about 3pt shooting teams in the playoffs

Boy, you don't handle getting your logic called out very well, do you?

What I reported wasn't three-point attempts. What I reported was three-point attempt rate. What that means is, given the choice when they go down the floor, what do elite teams choose to do? Shoot 2s, or shoot 3s?

By definition, teams that shoot a high percentage of shots as 3 pointers shoot a lower percentage of 2 pointers. In fact, the numbers are inverted. There were 3 teams that won the title while shooting in the top 10 at 2 point attempt rate. There were 9 teams that won a title while shooting in the bottom 10 at 2 point attempt rate. For that matter, quite a few of them rank in the bottom 5 in 2 point attempts per season.

Now, do they shoot a high percentage on 2 point attempts? Typically, yes, in fact they often lead the league. Now, why does that not support your point? Because the reason they lead the league in 2pt% is because they only attempt high-percentage 2 point field goals, such as attempts in the paint or wide open mid-range shots. Otherwise they strongly prefer to shoot 3 point shots, even though they typically don't hit as high a percentage of those. As an example, the 2011 Mavericks had the 3rd highest 3 point attempt rate in the league. They led the league in 2pt %, but had the 2nd lowest number of 2 point attempts! They were only 11th in 3 pt %, but they strongly preferred to take 3 point shots whenever they could. Extremely similar patterns can be seen in the 02 Lakers, 03 Spurs, 06 Heat and 10 Lakers, just in the past 15 years alone.

Great teams regularly tell low-percentage 2 point attempts to fuck off. And unless you want to actually support your points with data, rather than just make baseless claims, you can fuck right off too.
