Photojournalists: What should I major/minor in to become a photojournalist?

You may be skeptical about some of the responses here about possibly not going to school for this, or even taking up this career for that matter. But I studied photography for college, and it really was not worth it.

The process of going through school turned out just as it was supposed to. But in this line of work, you don't need to hold a degree to make money. So after spending years in school, a lot of us photographers(and creative arts students in general) are deep deep in debt. But the hilarious thing is that we didn't need to go and spend that money on a degree anyway! 98% of the jobs in this field will never require you to have a degree. We're not doctors, lawyers, or accountants. Look at all the techies out in San Fran right now, their skills and hard work is what got them that high paying job, not where they went to school. Now don't get me wrong, learning from a great teacher/mentor is an important part of your progress. But I think I can speak for a lot of us here when I say it's not worth the amount of money you're going to owe. If at your age you can't grasp this concept yet, look at it this way. When you graduate and get a job, half of the money you earn will automatically go to paying back student loans. So you make $100, you actually only got $50, every time. So unless your parents are going to pay your tuition, or if you're able to work and do school full time. I would really consider entering this field but do it without getting a degree.

On top of all of that, as others are mentioning here. Photojournalism is a dying(if not already dead) line of work. Finding a job is going to be difficult. Finding a job that pays enough is going to be even harder. Still, I'm not saying don't pursue your dreams, you should, just find a new way to enter this line of work without putting yourself in a bad situation to start off your life.

TLDR - Consider dedicating a year or two to building a collection of your work. Spending that time studying photographers you respect and admire. Go to news worthy events in your city and use them to practice(or even travel to do this), practice writing stories through photography. Now don't misunderstand me here, I'm not telling you to go to war, think more in the lines of public protest, or big elections, or even college/high school sports. Reach out to other photographers for critique on the photos you got. Keep doing this for a while. Once you have enough solid work to call a portfolio. Reach out to news/media companies and ask for an internship by showing the work you've collected. You can even ask real working photographers to be their assistant for a month or two just to learn through their experience and guidance. Once you've got past the internship phase, you now have the opportunity to enter the real work force with actual experience rather than through having a degree. And that's the alternative to earning yourself debt by going to school for something no ones really paying for anymore.
