The producers of 'Crazy Rich Asians' turned down a “gigantic payday” at Netflix to ensure the first Asian-American-focused studio movie in 25 years would be seen in theaters.

One of the biggest problems is that rarely any other Asians are showcased in these type of films aside from Chinese - Singaporean. Moreover, there's no actual real insight in Asian culture at all. I want to see a film that doesn't merely glamorize a culture, but actually goes in depth about it, talks about it's high points and it's problems. There's a lot of poor, lower class Asians who aren't Chinese and suffer from the similar dynamic of trying to break into an SO's family. In Vietnamese culture, usually it's the daughter in law who has to trial live-in with the household, has to leave behind her family, to prove that she's "worthy." See, now if this movie were about the problematic nature of this element in a lot of Asian cultures, then it would be a great film. But it only skims on top, pleasing the "rich woman", a typical romcom found in all cultures. That's not tied specifically to Asian culture. Everyone has to please their SO's family and get in favor of then. But not everyone has to leave their own family behind to serve the husband's family.
