Raised Catholic Thread

  • technically ethnic catholic, but went to a roman catholic church my entire childhood due to proximity where i was an altar boy for 10 years
  • half of my family is orthodox so we’d also go to orthodox mass for christmas and easter
  • non-denominational private christian school for k-12, mostly evangelicals. a really strong emphasis on community service both locally (one notable trip had me serving coffee to homeless heroin addicts) and internationally through mission trips (tho it very much depended on the trip and who was running it, some were holidays with service on the side). in yr 11-12 bible study could be replaced with a more rounded religious education that also taught islam or a theological cert
  • fluttered between catholic and evangelical youth groups - incredibly important for dating if u wanna move past the narrow selection available at school
  • didn’t really start drinking till uni, when i moved out. flunked that year due to too much partying and transferred to a different uni so i could move back home. still go back a couple of times a year to catchup with friends and party
  • met a girl while on holiday in the country of my background, ended up in the same class together at uni two years later (which blew my mind. she recommended i join the <ethnicity> society. they’re really fun, but i don’t go to church with them cause they live on the other side of the city, they’re very conservative though

despite the current split in my life, religion is still very important to me. no one has done me any wrong throughout it all and it really pains me when people would dismiss something so essential to the human experience just because they found it boring, tedious or annoying. i don’t think i’d have it any other kind of way tbh
