Random Fashion Thoughts - October 19, 2016

I mean self-perception definitely matters and I do think this post makes a great point about the fact that we're all going to be a bit biased towards fashion on thin bodies whether we want to be or not simply because that cultural perception is so pervasive. I think you can acknowledge the fact that this view of "thin = beautiful" is pervasive and socialized at a deep level while acknowledging that its not accurate. The only reason that anyone perceives a plus sized woman as unstylish is because we are socialized to think that way. That's a strong effect but I don't think it means you have to give up in fighting that perception.

In terms of how to fight that perception that's where the inspo pics come in. Representation matters and as a society we aren't going to get over that knee jerk "disapproval" reaction to plus sized bodies if we don't normalize it and normalize the perception of people of different body shapes as fashionable. I think you can acknowledge that negative self-perception is real and unsurprising considering how pervasive cultural perception on beauty are while still providing a counterpoint that you don't have to buy into the social perceptions and providing exposure to other images.

Its not easy and it will take time but none of us at any size/shape are going to get over the socialized view that beautiful = one thing unless we are exposed over and over again to alternative messages.
