The reality of old guy attitudes.

oh, so torn. such a classic example of id vs. ego.

on the one hand, yes....i won't lie...i think that would be a great logic bomb, to see the OP on QRZ for no other reason than to kick back and watch the fireworks.

on the other hand, i think, "must we poke the bear?"

on topic, though: look - the FCC makes the rules. they signed-off on allowing these types of radios - radios that can be programmed into multiple uses, for multiple markets - into the marketplace. further, i am quite certain they did some fairly extensive testing in order to ensure the requisite spectral purity of the emissions...and not just on a single, manufacturer-provided star example. now, i don't own one...and i can't speak to the quality control from the manufacturer. i have heard a number of folks saying they're using them--HTs, and i've even tuned above and below to see if i could detect any issues....nothing. i've also compared those folks' transmitted audio (over a repeater, i will admit) versus other users' audio.....didn't really hear a difference...and certainly nothing that caused me to say, "holy $#!+...what garbage did that dude put on the air?" small sample, to be sure...perhaps not directly extrapolatable to the whole...just my experience.

but i don't think this is really about the cheap chinese radios anyway. i think it is about fear. fear that the ham bands are going to end up like CB. fear that the applecart is going to get upset with a giant influx of new users they don't want to Elmer. fear the innundation of new users will limit their access to the repeater resources. fear of being edged-out, of being made to feel obsolete.

maybe i am wrong - and if it were just the topic of cheap chinese radios i might be inclined to hold my tongue. but it isn't just cheap chinese radios. it is the whole history of any proposed change in Amateur radio. introduction of the VEC scheme? elimination of the novice license? development of digital modes other than CW and RTTY? elimination of the CW requirement? without exception, the arguments against are always the same, and never come to fruition. it's actually somewhat embarassing.

what it boils down to is these folks don't want to grow the Service, any interest they had in Elmering is long gone, and they're not interested in exposure to what the next generation aspires to achieve through their journey in Amateur radio. they want things to stay the same as they have been for a generation. the less Service grows, the more resources available to those within.

simple fear and supply-and-demand....and little to do with the spectral purity or quality of chinese 2m/440 radios: it is a paper tiger.

...just my humble opinion.
