Reddit, what is your biggest pet peeve that would be gone if more people had basic scientific literacy?

I don't like when:

  • The narrator in a car commercial sounds-out "em-pee-aich". Abbreviating like that is really only helpful when you are writing.
  • People don't understand prefixes. 3,000 mAh is just 3 Ah. Sometimes this makes sense when comparing different values, but I think many people just start thinking of the abbreviation they use most as the unit. Like 5000 kilos or 10,000 MW.
  • I also don't like to compound units we use instead of the actual unit. Amp-hours, KiloWatt-hours. That's just Watts and Joules (with conversion factors).
  • Finally, when the brightness of an LED bulb is described by how much power it would use if it was an incandescent bulb. 60W equivalent!
