Redditers who have met up with internet friends in real life, what happened and was it awkward?

Here's a story of how I thought I had a long distance relationship for 6 months any when we finally met up it was disastrous.

I like to play video games a lot in my free time, it's just how I chill out after work. None of my friends who I really know have a PC or the new consoles so I had been playing by myself for a long time which can be pretty lonely.

I'm from Scotland and because of my accent I rarely talk to anyone through microphone as most people (especially Americans) cannot understand a word I say. So last year I go onto this UK gaming forum and make a post looking for some buddies to play some games with. When I woke up in the morning I checked the thread for any replies and someone left their gamer tag and steam ID for me to add them. So I add them on Steam and check their games and they play almost all of the games I do; CSS and GO,TF2, even down to a stupid indie game called xStream fishing.

But upon further inspection, I noticed from some details on her profile was actually a girl and her Twitter was on her profile so I checked it out and she was drop dead gorgeous. I was starting to feel a little worried now because I've never been good at talking to girls and just like that she just signed in and messaged me. She asked to Skype and we get talking away and it's not as bad as I thought t would have been and we got on really well.

We started playing games together and we got really good at everything we played. We arranged to buy new games together, we stayed up to stupid o'clock and days became weeks and weeks became months. At work all I could think about was gaming with her, I couldn't wait to home and start up some new crazy co op mission with her. She became my best friend.

One day I pluck up the courage to ask her out on a date. She lives nearly 250 miles away from me so we've never bothered to meet up but we had been getting on so well for around 6 months and it was obvious we both really liked each other. She said yes and we arrange to meet halfway at a train station in Edinburgh.

It was kinda awkward meeting up for the first time, the conversation was kinda dry but I imagine it was because we both shy and I nervous more so, I'd never been on a date before. So we were having dinner and my nerves are going mad. I see the waiter coming over with our servings of soup and me being a goofball stood up to take the soup and give it to her personally. I don't think the waiter expected it and jerked away causing the hot soup to spill all over her dress. She was screaming I like mad as I frantically tried to pay her down with the waiter away to get more napkins. She eventually calmed down and I was trying so hard to make it up to her but I could tell she wasn't interested anymore.

I asked there if there was anything I could do to make things right. She looked at me dead in the eyes and said "I'm gonna need about tree fiddy." It was at this time I realised the girl I had been gaming with was around 8 stories tall and a crustacean from the palaeolithic era.

"Damnit Lock Ness Monster, I ain't givin' you no tree fiddy!" I said to her as she swam away into the distance. I got on the next train home and just went straight to my bed, trying to piece together the last 6 months of my life.
