Redditors who have a job that requires you to go into strangers homes, what is the craziest thing you've seen?

Years ago, I did inspections of apartment renovation work. Some of the apartments were at least decent units (after renovation), but in low income parts of town. "Knock , Knock, maintenance!" We would knock and if no one answered, we would open her up. The kids were the worst. Kids must be taught to ignore strangers knocking, because we open up and there are often scared little ones hiding in the bedrooms. Usually not small toddlers, but we didn't ask too many questions - we just get in and out as quick as possible. (Today, we might have called someone.) But grown men and women would ignore us, too, until we turned the key, and they were sleeping or playing video games. By the way, poor children often scribble in crayon on the walls. Sad that this showed the level of supervision and the fact no one cared enough to clean it up. There are lots of apartments with literally no furniture, but maybe one bed. (Other people's food smells are terrible - I'm sure those folks would say the same about my dinner.) Anyway, I went into one apartment and there was a man with several kids. But there was a pool table wedged in the living room so that there was no other living room at all. To go in and out, they all had to crawl over or under the table. Looked like a semi-permanent arrangement as the kids clothes were laid about and there were even some neon decorations. But there were all the accessories, sticks and chalk and stuff, to play a pool tourney, even though you literally could barely squeeze down one broad side and corners were almost touching the walls. Priorities. Poverty is depressing and I'm glad I don't do that work anymore.
