Redditors who "went out for cigarettes" and never came back, why did you leave? Where did you go? What is life like for you now? [Serious]

Throwaway time, since idek who all in my family is even on reddit and my main has hentai and stuff on it.

So this was almost 10 years ago now, and it was not just me, it was also my mother and little brother.

My dad was a controlling emotionally abusive piece-of-shit human being, and his craziness only escalated after my older brother left home and cut dad out of his life. Little brother was born when my older brother and I were in high school, and is the same age as one of the youngest cousins on my mom's side of the family. Mom's brother only lives ~45 minute drive away from our house so when little bro was about 4-5, we started visiting their house frequently so little bro could play with little cousin.

About a year after older bro had cut all contact with dad, dad was really starting to show his crazy, and even little bro (who was spoiled rotten and usually didn't see dad's crazy side) was scared of what he might do next. So one day when we were visiting uncle's house, we just didn't go back home. Mom had apparently planned this the entire day and spoken with uncle and his wife about it beforehand, but it came as a complete surprise to little bro and me.

We went back to our the next day (with uncle and a police office just in case) while dad was at work and got our clothes. I also grabbed my favorite stuffed bunny. I did not see the rest of my possession again until after my parents' divorce was settled and mom had legal ownership of the house.

I was legally an adult at the time so I could not be forced to spend time with dad (and wouldn't have wanted to) but little bro was forced to spend time with him by court order during/after the divorce.

tl;dr - Mom finally got the ladyballs to get out of an emotionally abusive relationship, bringing me and my little brother with her to our uncle's house. (uncle = mom's brother)

I've left some shit out of the story so feel free to AMA.
