Remand numbers for Saskatoon jail show people awaiting trial outnumber guilty behind bars

This is like saying “print more money” to fix the economy.

Infrastructure is a holdback. So yes, “not having a webcam and wifi” is a real challenge.

You fail to explain how having only the Accused on video addresses any of the shortcomings or issues relating to “remote trials”. The presence of the accused is not the issue. The closure of the courts in the spring, the inability to have jury trials, restrictions on mass gatherings are all what caused the backlog we now deal with.

Believe it or not, one of the pandemic issues is large gatherings. So only having the accused appear via video is not the problem. Having all of the people for all of the courtrooms in the whole Courthouse is one of the issues we have.

An accused must be present in the courtroom for trials. It is part of the Criminal Code and an enshrined part of the trial process. It enables them to discuss with their lawyer the evidence and answer questions that arise.

And really? Threats of violence? Probably shouldn’t expect much tact from the incel crowd...
