"This breaks my immersion in the story" is always a valid complaint so it's not about "hand holding" so much as selling a scene.
Ah yes...plot holes...that could easily be explained in 2 sentences
My vague understanding of the way Star Wars handwaved the plot hole is basically to wave their hands and tell you to pretend this is required unique circumstances that never came up before and basically never will again.
The fact that you could create an explanation that flows well doesn't mean that they did and that's plausibly a problem for the film.
OF course, I think the exact opposite happened. "Kamikaze -> light -> prolonged silence" gave audiences a really cool and fun set piece moment for the film and most people didn't think "this makes no sense" in the moment.
Both this scene and the "Duel with not-Knight-of-Ren" have holes in their internal logic keyboard warriors have fairly picked apart. However, both scenes, like the prequel lightsaber scenes, genuinely work fantastically as big blockbuster scenes for the >95% of viewers whose minds didn't throw up red flags in the moment.
