Lightyear has ended it's domestic run after 12 weeks with $118M.

occam's Razor...thirty second shot

This doesn't work descriptively. Pixar employees got literal A-1 news coverage of "Lightyear's [then] cut gay kiss" and lobbied Disney to make explicit demands about content of future films.

Occam's Razor is that the explanation for this insanely high profile culture war shitshow over lightyear (as opposed to minimal culture war fights over Onward) is that the high profile inclusion of this in Disney's big fight with itself and the government of Florida over a k-4 education bill primed people to make this a big culture war fight.

just did not want to see this movie

possibly, but again, Lightyear had a deeply weird box office run. Perhaps it's just the new D+ norm parents imbibed but something really hurt the film's baseline ability to attract kid audiences both overall and for repeat viewings.

Lightyear seems to sort of stand on its own so we should look for more explanations.
